About Us
Lunsford Ridge Farm, home to the Lunsford Cattle Company, has been family-owned and operated for over 25 years. The property, located in Bracken County, Kentucky, was purchased in 1997 from the Hamilton family by Walt Lunsford. The farm began as a rolling 252 acres with creeks, ponds, and several long ridges that served as tobacco and hay fields. Since then, the operation has grown into a 1,000+ acre working cattle farm across two locations: the original farm in Bracken County and an additional farm in Robertson County, purchased in 2016 from the Hester Estate.
Walt purchased the farm originally as a place for refuge for he and his family. Walt, his sons Chase and Grayson, and his wife Margaret, all love the outdoors. In December of 2003, Chase saw an advertisement in a local paper for Texas Longhorns for sale. After a couple of visits to the farm just north of Cincinnati, they left with five unregistered Longhorns. Chase had his Christmas present for the year!
They were fascinated by the animals and soon became interested in the registered Longhorn business. Over the next three years, they bought more registered Longhorns, including “Matisse” and a bull that became our herd sire, “Unforgotten.” In 2007, they entered the feeder calf business, and purchased several hundred 500lb calves each year. They were raised to 850lb and sold. The fall of 2014 marked the end of the backgrounding operation and the beginning of the current cow-calf operation. They purchased a group of bred Angus heifers from the Mikkelson Ranch in Central Montana. In 2015 another group was purchased from the Stevenson’s Diamond Dot Ranch in Hobson, Montana along with Registered Angus herd bulls out of their superior genetics. Today, the cow-calf operation runs 250 pair.
Lunsford “Legacy Beef” began supplying local customers and restaurants with high quality, ethically raised, USDA Certified Angus beef. All of the beef is born, pasture grazed, and grain finished for 90 days on the farm. They are nourished in our Kentucky pastures, eating tall fescue, timothy, orchard grass and legumes such as alfalfa and clovers. There are no added growth hormones and are antibiotic free. Full of flavor and extremely tender, everyone says that they have never tasted beef like ours. Our cattle are processed at a local USDA facility where it is vacuum sealed for long lasting storage. Our beef is available in sides and quarters, as well as individual cuts. Ground beef is always available.
Currently, the farm has 550 head of cattle, chickens, a seasonal garden, and fifteen bee hives. The business continues to expand, and we are excited about the future of the farm.
